Local volunteers respond to tornadoes in Phelps, Pulaski and Dent Counties
The American Red Cross Capital Area Regional Chapter rang in 2011 by providing food, shelter, comfort and hope to families across central and eastern Missouri devastated by the tornados that touched down New Year's Eve. Volunteers from Mexico, Columbia, Jefferson City and the affected counties worked with families in Phelps, Pulaski and Dent counties over the weekend, making sure all of their immediate and emergency needs were met. Local volunteers and staff continue to work with family's returning to Ft Leonard Wood after the holidays to find homes damaged and destroyed. American Red Cross Capital Area Chapter officials introduced Dave Griffith as the chapter’s new executive director during a news conference Dec. 28.
“This opportunity is one that I feel like I have been preparing for over the 20 plus years of my volunteer life,” Griffith said at the news conference. “The impact that the American Red Cross has on the daily lives of the people is one that I take very seriously.
