The federal government treats some out-of-pocket expenses incurred on behalf of the Red Cross as charitable contributions that can be deducted on itemized income tax returns.

Many volunteers don’t know they’re entitled to deduct the expenses they pay to help the Red Cross.

American Red Cross Capital Area Chapter officials introduced Dave Griffith as the chapter’s new executive director during a news conference Dec. 28.

“This opportunity is one that I feel like I have been preparing for over the 20 plus years of my volunteer life,” Griffith said at the news conference. “The impact that the American Red Cross has on the daily lives of the people is one that I take very seriously.
